ReNu with MoistureLoc® Eye Solution Recall Attorneys: The San Diego Offices of Kerry Steigerwalt's Pacific Law Center
ReNu with MoistureLoc® Solution is a saline eye solution used with contact lenses. In April 2006, the makers of ReNu with MoistureLoc® initiated a recall of the product in the United States, suspending shipments, asking stores to take it off their shelves, and advising consumers to discontinue its use. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued warnings that a serious type of eye infection, Fusarium keratitis (Fusarium is a fungus, and keratitis is an inflammation of the eye’s cornea, the clear outer front layer of the eye), had been linked with the use of ReNu with MoistureLoc®. Confirmed or suspected cases of Fusarium keratitis associated with ReNu with MoistureLoc® use have been reported in 28 states and Puerto Rico. If left untreated, this rare but severe eye infection can lead to blindness. Fusarium is a common fungus, and it’s especially common in warmer climates. In fact, the Hong Kong and Singapore sales of ReNu with MoistureLoc® were halted a few months before the April U.S. recall. The surge in Fusarium infections in the United States goes back to June 2005, according to CDC reports.

Fusarium Keratitis Symptoms

Risk Factors for Fusarium Keratitis
Risk factors for a fungal infection of the eye include immunodeficiency, contact lens use, an instance of trauma (injury) of the eye, and chronic diseases of the ocular surface. Fusarium can get into the cornea as part of an injury, resulting in the inflammatory reaction.
Medical Treatment for Fusarium Keratitis
Medical treatment for a Fusarium keratitis eye solution infection includes topical and oral antifungal medication as a first option. If a patient’s infection doesn’t respond to these medications, surgery may be necessary. In eight of the cases of possible ReNu®-related eye solution infection reported by the CDC, the patients had to undergo corneal transplantation.
The makers of ReNu with MoistureLoc®, Bausch and Lomb, recommend that people who are using the product switch to another contact lens solution; they suggest ReNu MultiPlus®, the original ReNu Multi-Purpose eye solution, or another brand. There may be some confusion regarding contact lens solutions with “ ReNu” in their names. It is only ReNu with MoistureLoc® that has been the subject of a recall.
