About Paxil®
Paxil® (paroxetine) is one of the most popularly prescribed medications for treating major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Paxil® is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), which works as an anti-depressant by inhibiting the absorption of serotonin in the brain. By modifying the brain’s serotonin levels, Paxil® may correct an imbalance in patients and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Potential Side Effects Caused by Paxil®
Unfortunately, Paxil® has some unpleasant and potentially dangerous side effects. Studies have shown that some patients who take paroxetine experience worsening symptoms of depression and anxiety. In particular, Paxil® may cause patients to experience an increase of suicidal thoughts. In fact, studies seemed to indicate that the risk for suicide doubled for patients taking paroxetine. Patients were most likely to experience suicidal symptoms at the start of treatment, when doses were changed, and upon abruptly stopping the use of Paxil®. Physicians should closely monitor the reactions of patients taking anti-depressant drugs like Paxil®. If you or a loved one has been affected by the side effects of Paxil®, our defective drug lawyers can help. Contact the attorneys at our San Diego or Southern California offices to learn more. Paxil® and the Risk of Birth Defects
As a result of recent studies, the FDA and GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Paxil®, modified the warnings associated with this anti-depressant. Women who took Paxil® during the first three months of pregnancy showed a higher occurrence of birth defects, specifically cardiac conditions. Studies show that pregnant women who use Paxil® during the early stages of pregnancy are one-and-a-half to two times more likely to have children born with heart conditions, including holes in the heart’s major chambers and walls. More minor heart issues also are possible, but they are likely to heal themselves while showing no symptoms. Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should stop using Paxil®, and discuss alternative medications to prevent fetal injury. Celexa®, Lexapro®, Effexor®, and Zoloft®
In addition to Paxil®, there are several other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on the market today. Celexa® (citalopram), Lexapro® (escitalopram), Effexor® (venlafaxine), and Zoloft® (sertraline) are available by prescription in the United States. These drugs, which are prescribed to treat the symptoms of depression and anxiety, can cause a host of unpleasant and potentially dangerous side effects. Most noteworthy are the reports of increased suicidal thoughts experienced by patients when they start treatment with SSRIs. Psychiatrists who prescribe Celexa®, Lexapro®, Effexor®, and Zoloft® should monitor how individual patients react to these powerful drugs.
