Lawsuits against Makers of NuvaRing Contraceptive Begin to Mount

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed recently in Essex County, New Jersey against the makers of the contraceptive NuvaRing, and the number of lawsuits filed against the manufacturer and related parties now stands at 50 and counting.  The most recent action is in response to the death of a 32-year-old woman who had been using the product.

The lawsuit alleges that Kelly Bozicev had this product prescribed for her in May of 2007, and in December of 2007, she suffered from a seizure and died on the way to the hospital.  She leaves behind a husband and two children, who were two years old and seven months old at the time of her death.

The lawsuit alleges that NuvaRing’s manufacturers knew of the potential side effects and damage that could be done to those who used the product but concealed it from the public, the medical community and even the FDA, which approved the product for distribution in October of 2001.

The NuvaRing is a vaginal ring contraceptive that releases two hormones into the woman’s body, tonogestrel (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen).  The drugs are released into the woman’s body near the cervix, and the product is designed to prevent ovulation and minimize sperm penetration.

Due to the high concentrations of the hormones released into the woman’s body, users suffer from a risk of blood clots in affected areas.  Blood clotting can lead to pulmonary embolisms, amputations and even death, as is the case here.  According to medical reports, the victim in this case suffered from massive pulmonary thromboemboli due to deep vein thrombosis in the pelvic veins.

If you are using this product, seek immediate medical attention, and if you have suffered as a result of using NuvaRing, contact a defective products attorney immediately.
