About Avandia®
Avandia®, also known as rosiglitazone, is a medication designed to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. It is used to treat type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetes, also called adult-onset diabetes. Introduced in 1999 by GlaxoSmithKline, more than 60 million prescriptions for the drug have been written.
Avandia® Side Effects
GlaxoSmithKline sent letters to physicians in December 2006 warning them that Avandia® could cause side effects including conditions known as peripheral edema, which translates to fluid retention and swelling in the extremities; and macular edema, which refers to swelling and protein buildup in the eye. This fluid buildup can lead to many different problems, most notably congestive heart failure. One study conducted found that patients taking Avandia® were 43 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack. The buildup in the eye has been linked to vision problems, including blurred vision and decreased visual acuity. These side effects are not to be taken lightly; Avandia® is a dangerous drug.
